Income Tax Provision & ASC 740

An income tax provision is an accounting estimate of a company's current and deferred income tax expense. Under U.S. GAAP, ASC 740 (formerly FAS 109) and internationally under IAS 12, companies must recognize tax expense based on pre-tax accounting income, not just income taxes actually paid. This creates timing differences when book income and taxable income diverge due to temporary differences in revenue recognition, expense deductions, or loss carryforwards.

Accurate tax provision calculations are critical for financial reporting accuracy and audit compliance. Audit teams scrutinize tax provisions closely, and misstatements can trigger restatements or material weaknesses in internal controls. Tax provisions must reconcile to actual tax returns and reflect realistic assumptions about future profitability, tax rate changes, and the sustainability of tax positions taken on the return.

This calculator helps you calculate the effective tax rate (ETR), split current vs deferred tax expense, and ensure your provision aligns with statutory rates across 20+ jurisdictions. Input your pre-tax income, jurisdictional rates, and any temporary or permanent differences to generate a provision analysis and reconciliation journal entries.

Understanding Tax Provision

Tax provision — also known as the income tax provision or income tax expense — is the estimated amount of income tax that a company owes for a given period, calculated for financial reporting purposes under accounting standards such as ASC 740 (US GAAP) or IAS 12 (IFRS). Unlike the actual tax return, which is filed after year-end, the tax provision is prepared quarterly as part of the financial close process and directly impacts the company's effective tax rate (ETR) reported on its income statement.

The tax provision consists of two components. The current tax provision represents the amount of income tax payable (or refundable) for the current period based on taxable income. The deferred tax provision reflects the tax effects of temporary differences between the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities for financial reporting and their tax bases — these create deferred tax assets (DTAs) or deferred tax liabilities (DTLs) on the balance sheet. Common temporary differences include depreciation timing, revenue recognition, stock compensation, and provisions for bad debts or restructuring.

For multinational companies, the tax provision process is particularly complex because it must account for multiple tax jurisdictions, intercompany transactions, foreign tax credits, and — starting from 2024 — the impact of BEPS Pillar Two global minimum tax rules. Our BEPS Pillar Two Guide explains how the 15% global minimum tax interacts with existing tax provision methodologies and what adjustments companies need to make.

How to Use This Calculator

Our tax provision calculator helps you estimate your current and deferred tax expense by walking through the key inputs: pre-tax book income, permanent differences (items that will never reverse, like non-deductible fines or tax-exempt income), temporary differences (items that will reverse over time, like accelerated depreciation), and applicable tax rates. The tool outputs your estimated current tax expense, deferred tax impact, total provision, and effective tax rate.

After completing the provision, use our Return to Provision (RTP) tool to reconcile the actual tax return against the provision estimate and quantify any true-up adjustments needed. For companies with cross-border operations, our WHT Calculator helps estimate withholding tax impacts on intercompany payments, and our Transfer Pricing Calculator validates that intercompany margins are within arm's length ranges — both of which feed into the overall tax provision.
